Discipline Policy

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Welcome to our classroom! I look forward to a wonderful, productive year working with your children. I wanted to take a few minutes at the start of this school year to explain our classroom discipline system, based on a philosophy of "1-2-3: Take 5." Our room has a wall pocket chart that helps the students visually keep track of where they are behavior-wise during the day. The pocket chart consists of 5 (five) color-coded cards with each child's name on the card. After I have given the first 2 counts (or positive suggestions to make better choices), on count 3 a card is pulled. The colored cards indicate the following behaviors:

Purple card:
"Purple Perfect Day," (huge smiley face), -0- warnings

Green:
"Good Day," (smiley face), 1 warning, lose 5 minutes of recess or center time

Yellow:
"So-So Day," (straight face), 2 warnings, lose 10 minutes of recess or center time, note home

Blue:
"Not a Good Day," (sad face), 3 warnings, lose half of recess or center time, note and phone call home

Red:
"David Day," (based on the children's book "David Gets in Trouble,") (tantrum face), 4 warnings, lose all of recess or center time, note and phone call home plus visit to principal's office

If you stay on Purple for 5 (five) straight days, you will be awarded the chance to go to the treasure box on Friday.

This system will be implemented the first week of school.

On a final note, please rest assured that I know not everyone wakes up with a good day -- myself included! I always give all students ample opportunities to make better choices before turning a card. Please take a few minutes to discuss with your child this discipline system and ask them questions about it to ensure they understand both the REWARDS as well as consequences. Discuss with them also the additional rewards they might earn at home should they earn a Purple Perfect week!

As always, please contact me at any time should you have any questions or concerns about your child's needs. Thank you for all you do!
