Birth of a Nation ppt
D. W. Griffith's 1919 silent classic is still hailed as a masterpiece of innovative movie-making. It is also, by current standards, a startingly racist film. In both aspects, it tells more about the USA of its day than about the Civil War.
The Kid ppt
Charlie Chaplin's much beloved silent classic of the early '20s shows his devotion to the idea that it's possible to make audiences laugh and cry without a single spoken word. The Kid always winds up on AFC students' list of "my five favorite films in this class."
The Hays Code (Motion Picture Code of 1930)
Hollywood's first attempt to "police itself" was successful in avoiding government censorship of films, and left a strong imprint on American movie-making from 1930 until the late 1960s.
The Our Gang Comedies (aka "Little Rascals")
Fondly remembered by older Americans and still enjoyed by American children, these sentimental films had an anarchy about them that edged close to violating the motion picture code. One of the earliest examples of full racial equality in the movies, the comedies showed children merrily flouting authority and ruling their own world.
The Grapes of Wrath
John Ford's 1940 adaptation of John Steinbeck's classic novel is flawed in many ways. However, the director's beautiful cinematography faithfully recreates the author's vision of nobility among ordinary people who suffer.
